What to Expect
During A DOT Exam

A DOT exam is a simple and hassle-free process that involves taking your medical history, performing the exam, and filling out all the necessary paperwork.

1

Medical History

To provide an idea of your general health and family health history, you'll be asked to detail your medical history with the doctor, going through past and any current illnesses, diseases you have or run in your family, and your overall health, including a complete list of any current medications.

2

The Exam

This portion includes all the required elements of the physical exam: blood pressure check, vision check, hearing check, reflex response, hernia check, along with a basic urinalysis that tests for sugars, proteins or blood.

3

The Paperwork

The final step in the process is the paperwork. Once your medical history and exam are complete, the doctor will fill out all the necessary paperwork to process the exam results. You receive a laminated medical examiner’s certificate ("Med Card") to take with you. Both MCSA 5875 & MCSA 5876 are reported directly to the FMCSA by your examiner. You will also have the option to have these forms emailed directly to you.

4

The Results

With the implementation of NRII in 2025, your certification will be directly transmitted overnight from the FMCSA to your SDLA (State Driver Licensing Authority; aka "The DMV").

What does this mean for you?

You no longer need to turn in your exam or med-card to the state. Your certification is electronically attached to your dirver's license.

In Minnesota, you can check your CDL status by visiting the e-services section of DPS. Select All  Driver Services>Driving Privilege Lookup.
